Letter to Faculty concerning Textbook
Adoptions for Summer and Fall 2008:
In an effort to provide you and your students better service for the upcoming Summer and Fall Terms, we request your help and cooperation by submitting your Summer and Fall Semester 2008 textbook adoptions promptly by April 1, 2008. This date is critical in the success of the ordering process to ensure that your students have the required materials for class. The submittal process also includes all applicable supplies, kits and adjuncts you want to have available. If you are using software, web codes or study guides (required or optional), we recommend that you consider ordering a few of these items separately to provide for greater purchasing flexibility. We will release publisher purchase orders for Summer 2008 beginning April 21, 2008 and for Fall 2008 beginning June 2, 2008.
Secondary to having all course materials available at the start of the semester, the highest priority of the University Bookstore Staff is to make textbook purchases a little more affordable for our students by aggressively sourcing used textbooks. We accomplish a great deal of this through buy back, but the majority of our used textbook buying decisions rest solely on what you, the faculty, have decided to use for the upcoming semester. That affects what students can sell back to us during buy back. Because of this, we ask that you thoroughly evaluate your instructional needs for the Summer and Fall semester before deciding to go with bundles and new editions. Again, the submittal phase plays a very important role, not only in just what you elect to use, but what we are able to get afterwards because
in the national text marketplace, used textbooks go quickly.
You may submit your textbook adoptions via email or Campus Mail by downloading the adoption form from the link
above. There is also a link to a sample form. Blank forms will be available
in the Bookstore, too. The form has been reformatted as an Excel Spreadsheet, so for those submitting orders an entire academic department, you can insert all of your courses on one sheet. We hope this change makes the process easier. We ask that you use the standard textbook adoption form provided on all orders for continuity.
Adoption requests by telephone and informal email messages will not be accepted. Submittals done in this manner lead to errors and mishandling. We want to ensure all orders are accurate. Please remember to denote the course acronym, the respective course and section (CRN) numbers and which adopted material is “required”, “recommended” or “optional”. We want to be fair to our students in the ordering process and don’t want to mark a textbook “required” when, in fact, it is not.
Finally, your estimate of class size is extremely important because that information, together with other data collected and reviewed from the Registrar, will help determine the final size of each order. Over-ordering is a financial drain on the University and is becoming increasingly more so because publishers are now limiting return quantities. We will meet all enrollment needs but please be sure head counts are accurate.
On behalf of the Department of Auxiliary Services and the Clayton State University Bookstore Staff, we thank you for your continued support and look forward to serving you. If you have any additional questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us.
